Death of the "People's Princess"

Sunday August 31, 1997

OBITUARY

Shortly after midnight, an automobile accident that occurred in a tunnel near the Seine hospitalized Princess Diana of Wales and eventually led to her death. Also killed in the accident was Emad Mohammed al-Fayed, the Harrods heir, and the driver. The spokeswoman of the police reports that the “car was being chased by photographers on motorcycles,” and that could have contributed to the crash. Princess Diana had been on her way to London to be with her two sons, William and Harry.

On July 29, 1981, Diana was married to Prince Charles. She was immediately in the public eye following the “fairy-tale” wedding. She had her first son, Prince William in June 1982. In September 1984, Diana gave birth to Harry, but by then she was already suffering from bulimia and had already attempted suicide five times.

THE FUNERAL

On Saturday, the funeral for Princess Diana will be held in Westminster Abbey which has been the crowning and burial place of English sovereigns for nearly 1000 years. Following the ceremony, the body of Diana will be taken to the ancestral home of her family, the Spencers, in Althorp Northamptonshire. The burial ceremony will be private in a country church. Two thousand guests will be invited to the funeral that will also be televised. The Prime Minister of England believes that the outpouring of grief has been a reflection of the depth of affection and appreciation that people felt for Princess Diana and that the funeral should reflect just that. A garden of remembrance was formed on the outside of Kensington Palace with thousands of flower bouquets, cards, and poems.
