How stylish! |
In the second half of the 1990s, fashion became about the designers with extremely varied styles. Some of the common household designers included Vivianne Westwood, John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Christian Dior, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Gianni Versace, and Giorgiao Armani. Tommy Hilfiger was the Menswear Designer of the Year in 1995. Antwerp became the new fashion center. Crinkled shirts, ragged hems, and inside-out seams became accepted. Women wore flared trousers, pastel colors, cropped tops, Capri pants, and fleeces. Men wore khaki pants, leather jackets, and tracksuits. In 1999, cargo pants were introduced as sportswear. The baguette bag became the purse of the decade.
Old Navy, Gap, Abercrombie and Fitch, Nike, Adidas, Levis, Louis Vuitton, and Escada were the primary brands present during the late 1990s. Old Navy, Gap, and Abercrombie and Fitch displayed their brand prominently on much of their clothing.
Body decoration became of fad of the decade. People of all ages got tattoos or pierced parts of their body. There were no specific hairstyles for women in the decade, but rather an array of different looks. Men preferred very short hair during this time. Goths also became prominent during the time. They dressed like characters in gothic novels and emphasized black.
"Mom, did you really dress like that?" |
In the 1990s, fashion went more casual than ever before. Classrooms and corporations began instituting casual Fridays that allowed people to be comfortable and express their own individuality. Men usually wore khaki pants and a casual shirt. After the dot-com revolution, everyday became a casual Friday.
